Abstract Mixed Media Class with Jennifer Funk

Funk mixed media3.jpg

Come spend the afternoon with us creating a meaningful and heartfelt art piece filled with your imagination and love. In this class, Jennifer Funk will lead you through the process of creating an abstract acrylic mixed media painting. Jen will discuss working with warm and cool colors. You will then add texture and patterns to your piece to add interest and depth. Jen will bring fabric, paper and other found items to incorporate into the many layers of your painting. However, to increase the personal meaning of your piece, you are encouraged to bring some items that are meaningful to you to add to your creation! Some ideas are sheet music from a favorite song, book pages with meaningful passages, copies of letters, etc. You will then carve special words and phrases into the layers of the painting to finish it off. When you are done, you will not only have a beautiful piece of art, but a work that has personal meaning and depth to you!

About Jennifer…

Jennifer Funk is a mom to three brilliant daughters and a proud widow of her hero, Major Brad "Gyro" Funk. Jen started painting six years ago — basically as self-prescribed grief therapy. She had written some passages that she needed to be able to read daily. Painting was an attempt to give those words a pretty home. Over the years and with no formal art training, Jen experimented with different art forms realizing that creating was a very important part of her healing. Jen holds a degree in Elementary Education and loved teaching school for years; however, two years ago she became the student when she went back to school to take her first ever art class. Jen is having a great time learning more about this craft that has been so healing and transformative for her.

Most of Jen’s work reflects an element of loss, healing or love, and many pieces include some happy tears mixed in as well. Jen sums up her work as "Hope...in color." To her, the purpose of art is to evoke emotion … to have someone FEEL something when they look at it … to make a connection. Most of her work is fairly abstract. She loves using pattern, texture, line, and color to convey emotions and ideas. She experiments with new media all the time, but is currently working mostly in acrylic and oil. She then adds mixed media accents of fabric, gold leaf, paper, found objects, graphite, pastel and charcoal. In her happy little home studio, Jen has discovered the magic of creating through her paintings, limited edition prints, greeting cards, notebooks, and hand stamped leather cuff bracelets.
