Art Box is excited to feature local artist Kevin Parson for February’s Art Stroll. Kevin’s medium is pottery, and his work is as interesting as it is beautiful. If you have not seen his ceramics before, you are in for a wonderful treat! Kevin will also be throwing some work on his wheel during the Stroll, so make sure you stop in and say hello. Light refreshments will also be served.
I am a Utah native – I literally live less than 25 miles from where I was born. My pottery is inspired by the colors and textures found along the Wasatch front and the deserts of southern Utah. I started working in clay in high school with David Jackson as my first inspiration and mentor, and went on to earn my BFA from the University of Utah in 1990.
My relationship with clay has changed over the years, from abstract to functional, and from large wall installations to simple mugs and tea bowls. The latter of these examples is where I find myself right now. Coffee mugs are my current wheelhouse. I love the rhythm of working with clay, the glazing process, the firing process, and the earth’s sciences that are at the core of working in ceramics.
I know mugs are not an "edgy" or "arty" thing to make, but they are just so damn comforting to be with and to hold onto. And when everything sets up just right—when the glazes move down the steep vertical surfaces of the mugs I create and spill over an edge coming in contact with the raw clay—colors develop that are beyond my influence. These moments that get frozen in time, so simple and impossible...that’s one of the main reasons I work with clay.
And it’s all captured on a mug…I love the irony.
